http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors/Schedule
(18:04:27) lxmaier: our first item: Famsco Update
(18:04:35) lxmaier: a meeting took place on monday
(18:05:04) lxmaier: you can see the transcript here :

(18:05:23) lxmaier: you can see next meeting's agenda here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors/SteeringCommittee/Meetings
(18:05:31) lxmaier: a few highlights from the meeting:
(18:05:49) lxmaier: mspevack reports so we've been shipping DVDs
all over the world the last month or two and it's *incredibly*
expensive and not a very good method of spending our money
(18:06:25) lxmaier: we are looking into different alternative methods
to help our ambassadors out with goods and money
(18:07:16) lxmaier: mspevack will write up a proposal for how to
handle the distribution
(18:07:39) lxmaier: tchung reports Since last report, we have 6
more new members See
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Projects/WeeklyReports/2006-04-24
(18:07:50) lxmaier: so our group is steadily growing
(18:07:51) ChitleshGoorah: !
(18:08:14) lxmaier: As of 2006-04-30, we have 65 approved members

(18:09:03) ChitleshGoorah: there are no updates for the moment
(18:09:26) ChitleshGoorah: but there will be soon some new elements in
Kadischi itself and that
(18:09:31) lxmaier: ChitleshGoorah: you are veryout of order, you realise that?

(18:10:44) mspevack
[n=mspevack@rrcs-24-199-152-57.midsouth.biz.rr.com] entered the room.
(18:10:50) MrTom: i don't really understand why it is not a good
method for spending our money as mspevack said :) hi mspevack :)
(18:10:56) mspevack: hi
(18:10:58) mspevack: sorry i'm late
(18:11:11) mspevack: my cat ran outside and i had to chase him around
the neighborhood with the help of a couple kids
(18:11:42) MrTom: mspevack, i was talking about the DVD shipping and
what you said during the FAMSCO meeting
(18:11:44) lxmaier: i hope the cat is fine mspevack, do you want to
expand on the spending calamity?
(18:12:18) mspevack: sure -- bottom line is that we've been slowly
getting ourselves sucked into the business of global distribution
(18:12:28) mspevack: mailing DVDs, shirts, etc from Raleigh all over the world
(18:12:34) mspevack: it's just an inefficient use of money
(18:12:48) mspevack: better use of money is to sponsor shows, and
build up an infrastructure
(18:13:00) gomix: vote for that (sorry)
(18:13:00) ke4qqq: !
(18:13:01) mspevack: that allows people worldwide to make use of
local production capability to produce DVDs, etc
(18:13:17) lxmaier: !
(18:13:19) mspevack: EOF for now
(18:13:23) lxmaier: > ke4qqq
(18:13:37) ke4qqq: is it practical to have other parts of hte world do
small qty build outs
(18:13:55) ke4qqq: from a monetary perspective? or is it less
expensive than global distribution?
(18:14:25) mspevack: ke4qqq: an interesting point.
(18:14:29) mspevack: if i may elaborate:
(18:14:34) gomix: may i havea word?
(18:15:11) ke4qqq: eof
(18:15:25) lxmaier: > mspevack please, elaborate :)
(18:15:29) mspevack: we've got a store set up here in the US that is
about to go live, which allows people to order fedora stuff, and the
shipping (within the US) is reasonably priced. A project for the next
couple of months (we're gonna have Jack Aboutboul work on it) is
figuring out how to replicate that kind of a setup internationally
(18:15:40) mspevack: if we can get that in place, then:
(18:15:51) mspevack: the local ambassadors/folks putting on a small to
mid-size show
(18:15:57) mspevack: don't have to figure out how to get 100 DVDs made
(18:16:05) mspevack: they can just order them from somewhere that's
reasonably close by
(18:16:08) mspevack: and not get killed on shipping
(18:16:14) mspevack: so that's the grand vision -- and we need to try
to make it happen
(18:16:20) mspevack: eof
(18:16:22) MrTom: !
(18:16:23) gomix: may i have a word?
(18:16:26) gomix: !
(18:16:44) lxmaier: > lxmaier ( mspevack, MrTom, gomix )
(18:17:11) mspevack: eof for now, for me
(18:17:21) gomix: i'm from venezuela, and i do believe we can arrange
with some companies to produce some DVDs locally
(18:17:25) lxmaier: mspevack: could you please update the budget table
in the wiki with the spending, so all of the ambassadors can see what
you're talking about
(18:17:26) lxmaier: ?
(18:17:32) lxmaier: gomix: you are out of order
(18:17:46) lxmaier: gomix: please wait till you are recognized
(18:17:58) gomix: k
(18:18:02) mspevack: lxmaier: sure
(18:18:11) lxmaier: mspevack: thanks
(18:18:13) lxmaier: eof
(18:18:22) lxmaier: > MrTom (gomix)
(18:18:24) MrTom: but ambassadors would have to *pay* for ordering
stuffs wouldn't they ?
(18:19:13) lxmaier: mspevack: want to respond?
(18:19:22) mspevack: lxmaier: yes
(18:19:32) mspevack: there's a few different scenarios:
(18:19:36) mspevack: 1: just like it is now
(18:19:44) mspevack: people request money for an event, some amount of
money is given
(18:20:00) mspevack: they spend that money as they see fit, and file a
report with expenses, how it was spent, the gain, etc.
(18:20:03) mspevack: and they are reimbursed
(18:20:16) mspevack: 2: people want to do *even more* than the money
that FAMSCO can provide directly
(18:20:56) mspevack: so, people take the money that famsco is
offering, but they also get even more stuff on their own, and then
re-sell it at the event (for a small cost, think of it as a Fedora
Suggested Retail Price) and use those funds to recoup costs
(18:21:10) mspevack: you could therefore have an event that is
entirely self-sufficient
(18:21:22) mspevack: but you don't have to do it that way if you don't want to
(18:21:35) MrTom: !
(18:21:35) mspevack: it just increases the number of options for
ambassadors and event organizers in the way they handle things
(18:21:50) mspevack: EOF
(18:21:52) lxmaier: > gomix ( MrTom, )
(18:22:09) gomix: thanks,
(18:22:12) McGiwer: !
(18:22:36) gomix: im from venezuela, i just want to comment that some
companies might want to get involved on the production
(18:22:41) gomix: of CD or DVDs...
(18:22:59) gomix: that's the case of our company which provides full
support to Fedora
(18:23:28) gomix: then paying/billing/reporting can be done in a
formal way through ambassadors in those kind of companies
(18:23:43) lxmaier: !
(18:24:04) lxmaier: gomix: are you finished? if yes, type "EOF"
(18:24:07) gomix: also those companies might put some money too in it
being sponsored by Fedora Project

(18:24:21) lxmaier: > MrTom ( McGiwer, lxmaier)
(18:24:23) MrTom: about the store you are talking about... will it be
a public store? if yes, what would happen if the store run out of DVDs
and that an important event will not be able to receive any dvds?

(18:24:41) lxmaier: > mspevack: re: store
(18:25:28) mspevack: gregdek knows more, but yes, it will be a public
store. They're going to be stocking thousands of DVDs, and if we see
the numbers getting low, then we will make sure they make more
(18:25:47) mspevack: but you don't want to make too many, or else FC6
comes out and all of a sudden you have a bunch of old discs that no
one wants :_)

(18:27:45) McGiwer: will it be still possible to order stuff from FAMSCO?
(18:27:55) McGiwer: and, one more suggest
(18:28:25) McGiwer: i think it would be much better if the stuff at an
event was given for free
(18:28:49) McGiwer: but if it was really low price, selling would be
also reasonable
(18:28:52) McGiwer: EOF

(18:29:19) mspevack: i can respond
(18:29:26) lxmaier: then go ahead :)
(18:29:40) mspevack: Like I said, first of all, anyone who runs an
event is always able to give stuff away for free
(18:29:46) mspevack: BUT
(18:30:01) mspevack: if someone *wants* to charge a small price for
some things in order to recoup some costs, then that option will be
made available
(18:30:08) mspevack: and FAMSCO needs to set some guidelines around that
(18:30:21) mspevack: to your other point
(18:30:41) ChitleshGoorah: !
(18:30:42) mspevack: FAMSCO is *not* saying that it will no longer
contribute budget towards events
(18:31:11) mspevack: what we are saying is that we're developing a
system that hopefully will make it easier for events to happen, and
allow them to happen at a lower cost, and with less direct
intervention from famsco
(18:31:19) mspevack: because that's a much more globally scalable solution
(18:31:21) mspevack: EOF
